Artist Statement
Clues
A wise maintenance worker once said something along the lines of, the unsocial world of strangers today makes it difficult to talk to new people, so it is almost easier to know a stranger by just looking.
This inspired the artist into exploring how we interpret body language in relation to the environment to learn more on their identity. By photographing in public with minimal interference the artist was able to capture the unconscious non-verbal communications through body language. As one of the most honest forms of communication, the viewer is then held at observing through the clues given as a form of identification.
The artist has intentionally chosen to crop the images, leaving out significant parts to the understanding of the settings, like heads, body parts or objects, which may otherwise bring the image to a whole. This intentional act, gives you as the viewer the opportunity to more easily notice what is missing, because if you are always seeking what is there, you have the answer handed to you. However the artist encourages you to work for the answer within those clues to gain your understanding of the image as a whole.
